HAWKS HILL RANCH WINERY
With a love for the Paso Robles wine region that spans decades, the Kuyper family planted roots here in 2005. They searched for the perfect property on Paso’s coveted west side and ultimately found it: a ridge-top parcel blessed by Mother Nature with inimitable terroir. Perched at 2,000 feet, this 240-acre ranch boasts some of the highest vineyard elevations in San Luis Obispo County.
Located in the Adelaida District sub-AVA, the family began planting vines in 2006 with the goal of growing some of the region’s finest fruit. Nineteen years later, Hawks Hill Ranch now spans 32 planted acres and is proudly sourced by some of Paso’s most acclaimed vintners. The vineyard is broken down into 17 blocks. All red varietals consisting of Syrah, Grenache, Mourvèdre, Zinfandel, and Cabernet Sauvignon. With a love of true Burgundian Chardonnay, we also source fruit from San Simeon, just steps from the Pacific Ocean, crafting a white wine stylistically in line with those of Meursault and Montrachet.
At Hawks Hill Ranch, we believe in ranching and farming first—winemaking is the culmination of those two foundational practices. Rather than forcing the land into submission, we work in harmony with it. Our approach is grounded in a balanced blend of generational farming knowledge and contemporary insights—from regenerative organic and biodynamic practices to neighborly wisdom shared over vineyard fences. Our mission is to guide what nature has already begun, always with a long-term vision for the health of the land and the depth of the wine.
We’ve assembled an extraordinary winemaking team led by two of Paso’s most respected talents: Anthony Yount and Don Burns. Anthony is widely known as one of the premier white wine making talents in the county, if not the state. Don is rooted in Saxum lore and has a coveted 100pt. score with his own brand, Turtle Rock. With their shared commitment to precision, creativity, and transparency, we ensure our wines reflect the land’s full complexity—layered, expressive, and unmistakably Hawks Hill.
Since opening our doors in Summer 2022, our tasting room has welcomed guests to experience this story firsthand. Just a quarter-mile past Daou on Adelaida Road, our restored 100-year-old barn is perched on a mountaintop with panoramic views, just two miles from our estate vineyard. Tastings are offered by appointment in a warm, relaxed setting that invites you to slow down and settle in.
But it’s our Estate Ranch Tour experience that has quickly become one of the most iconic offerings in Paso. Guests are chauffeured to the estate and set out in RTVs (Kubota side-by-sides) for a private, immersive vineyard journey. The tour begins in a 250-year-old Manzanita grove and winds through five distinct vineyard blocks, where you’ll taste wines grown exactly where you stand.
As you explore, you’ll encounter the true heartbeat of our land: an ever-growing flock of working sheep and their watchful guardians, our family of Great Pyrenees. Fluffy and gentle—nicknamed Paso’s Polar Bears—these dogs roam freely, playing their natural role as protectors. The sheep are vital to our regenerative farming approach: fertilizing the soil, restoring forest floors, and clearing undergrowth across the property. The land transforms with the seasons, and so does the flock. Depending on when you visit, you might see lambs wobbling toward their mothers during lambing season, sheep resting under summer oaks, or the flock grazing through vineyard rows just after harvest.
All of this unfolds across a landscape that feels almost oceanic. The rolling hills of West Paso resemble waves frozen mid-crest, glowing in a blue afternoon hue. Being just 10 nautical miles from the Pacific, the ranch is shaped daily by the ocean’s titanic influence. In the afternoon, a blanket of marine layer rolls over the Santa Lucia ridge into the Adelaide (as we locals refer to it), allowing vines to halt ripening efforts and retain acidity, an important factor indeed!
The tour culminates in a mountaintop lunch beneath the ancient Manzanitas, where you can take it all in with a glass of estate-grown wine and a sense of belonging. Offered year-round, the nature of this outdoor excursion experience encourages guests to embrace the time of year by dressing appropriately for the forecast. This 2.5-hour experience is typically offered for groups of one to four and truly redefines what it means to visit wine country. You can reserve online with ease, but if you’re planning for a larger group or hoping to visit outside standard offerings, we encourage you to contact us directly. We’ll do our best to create a personalized Hawks Hill Ranch experience just for you.
